This is very similar to being a broker. There are HUNDREDS of people trying to find a place to rent, or buy a house, and even more people trying to rent their house or sell their house. Connect the two! This missing link in this process is a human connection. Be that connection. Go on the “FOR RENT” section and send houses to people looking for a rent. But here is the key because no one wants to work for free: Contact the person trying to rent/sell their house and work out a flat rate/commission deal if you send leads their way. Most of the time people are willing to do this. I tried this awhile back: I charged a flat fee (I love charging flat fees, no math!) of $100 if I found a renter for the person trying to rent. Now to them, $100 is nothing for something paying a chunk to them each and every month. But for me, copying and pasting a link of a place that is for rent is an easy $100 in my pocket. High-end neighborhood in your town? CHARGE MORE!

This is a great way to make $BIG$ money, but it also requires more start up cost, which may not be feasible for some. It also requires special business/reselling licenses, which vary state to state. If but you are willing to do some research and you have the cash (even $500) you can start flipping cars. This one is especially great if you have a little mechanic experience. People are always giving up on cars either because they broke, they are moving away, or they just upgraded. You can score some cheap cars, give them a good shining, maybe a few upgrades and turn around and sell it for more money, making a bigger profit. Think about how this works. Let’s say someone has an older car, just upgraded, “needs work”, and you can score it for $1000, throw on new brakes, shine it up, flip it for $2,000 in a week, that is a $1000 profit in a week. Not bad. Again, you do need to approach this with some business licenses so check with your local area to see what you need to do.

I have seen it time and time again: People say they have stuff they want to sell, but it is “just easier” to throw it away. I see that as people are throwing away money. When you here this, why not make money for you, and them. Tell them you will sell their stuff, and you will keep a commission. Easy money if you ask me. Sell an old bike for $100, and at 30% commissions, that is an easy $30 in your pocket and your friend makes $70. Have a really good friend? Split the profit 50/50. That is more money in your pocket and your friend makes money and gets rid of the junk. That is a great business relationship if you ask me! You can even browse those people selling on Craigslist that do a poor job at selling and offer to sell their item for more of a profit.

There is a whole section on Craigslist dedicate for people who are giving things away for FREE. Most of the items you will find on this section are pretty much worthless to you, unless you need Dirt or Firewood. But occasionally you will come across a near new piece of furniture, or something that you can actually use. Also, think outside the box. If you can sew, or do wood working, or any thing else, some of the “bad” items can easily be turned into a beautiful piece of art. And since you aren’t spending money and you get something that has (potential) value, that is a profit my friend.

Probably the single best place to make money, as it is trading items for money. And there is multiple ways you can make money within this section.

  • Sell your own stuff. I am fairly positive most of you have something you don’t use, don’t need, and don’t care to own anymore. Why not sell it? Why not clear up the clutter AND put some cash in your hand?
  • Sell OTHERS stuff. Friends and family have the same junk you do. But they don’t want to sell it themselves. Tell them you will sell it for them and you will take 25% of what you sell it for. I have done this and most family members just say “keep it all, I just want it out of my house”.
  • Buy something and sell for profit. The old school buy low sell high works well on craigslist. People price items too low all to often. But something for $5, polish it up and sell for $25. Easy $20 cash profit.

If you already have a 9-5 job and you are not really looking for another part time clock punching job, but want something to supplement your income, Gigs is the place for you. Gigs is the place where people post who have one-time jobs. Craigslist breaks it down into computer, event, creative, crew, domestic, writing, labor, talent and adult. Chances are, you have something to offer in one, if not a few of these categories. The nice thing about the gigs is that they are NOT jobs, so you can take them on your terms. If someone posts a certain price, you have the room to negotiate because YOU are doing the work and don’t have to take anything less that what you think you deserve. This is more trading dollars for services, whatever those may be, versus getting a salary for trading hours for money.

Ok Ok Ok, I know this is a no brainer. But think about it – when we talk about making money, and making money via Craigslist, the job board is a constant barrage of ways to make money. Now, I would have to guess that most of you reading this have a full time job and aren’t looking to switch, and that’s fine. If you need a full time job, this is a great place to look. If you don’t, there are still part time side jobs you can take nights, weekends, off hours. These are a safe bet as you trade money for work. Look for something you may enjoy. For example, if you like golf, why not go work weekends at local golf shop or course? Do something you love, and make a few extra bucks.

One of my favorite past times is human behavior. Yes – I am a complete nerd, but I love watching the behaviors and patterns of people and learning about them, what makes them tick, how to exploit them, and how to profit from them. My experiences on Craigslist is no different.

I have sold to hundreds of different people over the years, if not thousands. Everyone has a different reason and need to buy. But all of them had done something during the buying phase which helps me price items.

The Famous Craigslist Price Negotiation

Most of the sale that I have ever made on Craigslist has always been less than the asking price. Now – you may think that is an issue, but keep reading and Ill show you how I use that to my advantage.

People on craigslist are looking for deals and/or to save a few bucks.  That is the only reason why they are on there hunting for product. If they wanted to pay full price, they would have gone to the store to get what you are selling. But instead, they continually look through thousands of annoying, spammy ads (not yours of course – right?) until they find the one deal they are looking for. And because they are looking for deals, people will always try to offer you a lower price than you listed. And this puts you, the seller, into a wierd postion. You know what you want for it, but if everyone is going to offer you a lower price, how do you ensure you get the highest possible price for your item?

Offer A Higher Initial Price

By offering an initial higher price, you will counteract the “cheaper price” that people offer and actually get what you want for your item. You will may scare away a few people and put less eyes on your product, but those that do see it will nearly immediately offer you a lower price, the price you are hoping to get. If you want to get $50 for an item, offer it at $60. More than likely, someone will email you “Willing to take $50 for it?” And yes – you are willing. They buyer gets the feeling they are getting a deal and you get your money.

You also will benefit of of those “gotta have it” guys that will actually email you and offer you $60. $10 more than you wanted. You’re OK with that, right?

Do Your Research

Don’t get greedy here. If you are selling a surfboard and its worth $100, don’t post it for $450. People know what it is worth – your listing is side by side with hundreds of other of the same items. No one will touch your over price surfboard. Make sure to do your research and know what you higher end of your pricing is. You want people to click on your ad so price appropriately. This is easy to do research on cragislist, just click on a few other ads and find one that is over price and mark it around the same. Remember, if someone wants it, they will make an offer – which is exactly what you want.

Welcome to my make money on craigslist blog! I started out as most do, trying to find random things around your house to sell for extra money. Once I did that – I learned that it is fairly easy to make money on craigslist and it was different than making money other places. Once I saw this, I started spending a few hours on craigslist over the weekends and making some great money, better than any other thing I have done.

Before I dig into that more, let me take a big step back and tell you how I got started.

I was a freshman at San Diego State and on top of the world. I lived in my own place on a granny flat on my parents property which means I paid no rent and had a place all to myself. I had a job that paid some what decent money for being 18. I had a girlfriend I was just started to get serious with. I was living the dream for an 18 year old. But that changed quickly.

In October of 2003, I lost every physical thing I owned. And when I say everything, I literally mean everything. There was a huge wildfire in San Diego that year and the property I lived on was destroyed. I ran from the house with literally the shirt on my back and the shoes on my feet. I didn’t even have socks!

No big deal, right? Insurance takes care of everything. Yes – if we had it. My parents were somewhat old school in their beliefs and didn’t have any insurance. I was up the creek without a paddle. And that started a spiral downward that pushed me over the edge. I struggled to catch up in school after taking so many days out, which eventually didn’t happened and I flunked out my freshman year. I cut back on my hours at work, to this day I still have no good reason why, which mean no money coming in. And on top of all of that, I decided that this would be a great to move out with my girlfriend. At the time, great idea for us. Bad idea for money.

Life goes on though, and eventually things started smoothing out. I went to a junior college and eventually back in to SDSU. I started working more and more hours to bring in more and more income. But that jump moving out was too much, and I never seemed to have any money. Have you ever felt like that? To say I was living pay check to pay check would be an understatement. I remember having $.43 in my bank account, needing groceries on Sunday and not getting paid on Monday. But if I did credit on my debit card, the bank wouldn’t clear the funds till wed, allowing me time to put the pay check in and have everything be fine. But even that wasn’t my breaking point.

My breaking point was popcorn. I went to a concert with my friend and some friends (mother in law bought tickets for us). I went to the restroom with my buddy and he stopped to get a soda and popcorn for his girlfriend. The total was $13.50. I wanted to get some for my girlfriend, but I didn’t have $13.50 available at the time. Walking back, I remember seeing that look in her face, that look of disappointment, but understand where we were at. That is the point I said no more. That is when I decided I need to pick myself up and change. I need to make more money.

Now bringing this story back to why you are reading this. I turned to Craigslist for extra money. I started off selling everything I had for a few bucks. If I had something and I wasn’t actively using it, it was getting sold. I had some great success selling stuff, and made sure everyone knew what I was doing. People started getting me their stuff to sell so I had always stream of stuff to sell. After college, I stilled used craigslist to make some money as needed. I started to devising other ways to make money and found some ways that I was quite successful at. And that got me to here now.

I created easymoneywithcraigslist.com to help you do the same. I have been where you are at. I know what it is like to know you need more but not know how. I know when backs against the wall and you will do anything to just make ends meet. Craigslist works – I am proof. This blog will help you get there. You don’t need a lot, but you do need something. I get it, really I do. I want to help you buy that popcorn.

SIgn up for my mailing list and I will show you 9 ways you can use craigslist NOW to start making cash. And drop me a line if you are looking for ways – I want to help you get to where you want to be!

To your success –

Zach
